What we fix

Central air

Capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors, compressors, refrigerant leaks and frozen coils.

Ductless mini-splits

Single and multi-zone systems: clogged drains, dirty coils, sensor faults and error codes. New installs for homes without ducts.

PTAC and through-wall units

The packaged units under apartment windows: fans, controls, coils and replacements, for owners, tenants and property managers.

Tune-ups

Coil cleaning, electrical checks, refrigerant readings and drain clearing, done before the first heat wave.

Check these before you call

  • The thermostat is on Cool and set below the room temperature.
  • The breaker and the outdoor disconnect are on.
  • The filter is clean.
  • The outdoor unit is clear of leaves, grass and cottonwood fluff.
  • If you see ice on the copper lines, switch to Fan only.

Cooling questions

Why is my outdoor AC unit not turning on?

If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit is silent, check the breaker and the disconnect box next to the unit. If both are on, the usual causes are a failed capacitor, a burned contactor or a tripped float switch on the indoor drain pan that cuts power to the outdoor unit. A humming unit that will not start is often the capacitor.

Why is my AC running all day and not keeping up?

Dirty filters, a condenser packed with cottonwood fluff and leaves, and low refrigerant from a leak are the top three. On the hottest days a system that is slightly undersized will run nonstop. If the air coming out of the vents is not noticeably cold, shut it off and call before the compressor overheats.

Why is my AC freezing up?

Ice on the indoor coil or the copper line means the coil is too cold, usually from low airflow (a clogged filter, closed vents, a weak blower) or low refrigerant. Set the thermostat to Fan only so it thaws, then call. Running a frozen system can ruin the compressor.

Do you work on through-wall and window-style units in apartments?

Yes. A lot of Rensselaer buildings use packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs) and through-wall heat pumps. We clean, repair and replace them, including for landlords and property managers with multi-unit buildings.

Is a ductless mini-split worth it in an older home?

Often. Many homes on the hills above the river were built for radiators and have no ductwork. A ductless system adds cooling and efficient heat without tearing open walls, and one outdoor unit can serve several rooms.

How long should a central air conditioner last?

Many central systems last somewhere between 12 and 17 years, depending on installation and maintenance. If yours is in that range and needs a major repair, ask us to price a repair and a replacement side by side.
